When you first spawn in a world, you will be in normal mode. In normal mode, you cannot break blocks, place blocks or use items. Left and right click are completely disabled. If you want to start editing your world, you have to change to another mode. There are currently two modes, besides the normal mode: insert and replace. Insert mode is how Minecraft normally behaves. (At least when used without modifiers.) Replace mode allows you to replace a block with another one, when using your block place button. You may also destroy blocks in this mode.

Additionally to the modes, there are modifiers, which add even more flexibility to your building sessions. These are not tied to specific modes, though modes may temporary disable incompatible modifiers. You will be alerted via a toast, in case a modifier is disabled. Disabled modifiers will be automatically reactivated, in case you enter a mode, which supports them.
